Pendle was formed in 1974, by the amalgamation of the boroughs of Nelson and Colne, the urban districts of Barnoldswick, Barrowford, Brierfield, Earby and Trawden and the largely rurual areas surrounding. The north of the disctrict in known as West Craven and is part of the historic West Riding of Yorkshire. Today there is a large business park at Lomeshaye and smaller estates at Barnoldswick, Earby and Colne. With many of the old cotton mills in the district still hosting a wide variety of businesses.
